About Coach Bryant Wright
Building champions on and off the course.

Coach Bryant Wright
Bryant Wright is one of the most accomplished and respected cross country coaches in Missouri history.
Over the course of 24 seasons as the head boys cross country coach at Festus High School and 21 years as the head girls cross country coach, Wright built one of the most dominant dynasties the sport has ever seen at the high school level.
Under Wright's leadership, the Festus Tigers boys program captured 11 state championships, including a historic run of eight consecutive titles from 2014 to 2021.
The program won or finished as runner-up at the state meet in every single year from 2009 to 2025. Wright also guided the Festus girls to two state championships, in 2014 and 2017. Five individual boys state champions emerged from his program: Drew White, Tyler Gillam, Michael Karls, Maxwell McDaniel, and Carson Driemeier. The girls had one individual champion in Alysa Allison.
Wright's achievements earned him induction into the Missouri Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2019.
What has always set Bryant Wright apart from other coaches is his philosophy, one rooted not in statistics or trophies, but in the development of young men and women. He has consistently emphasized team over individual, famously dismissing the notion that cross country is an individual sport.
He has said that working for something greater than yourself is what allows athletes to truly transcend their own performance. His program culture is one where athletes hold each other accountable, where seniors mentor the next generation, and where every runner from varsity stars to freshman newcomers feels invested in the team's legacy.
Wright has spoken openly about what drives him. For him, the championships are meaningful, but the real measure of success is watching young men and women grow, mature, and become better people. His goal has never simply been to produce fast runners. It has been to develop good teammates, good leaders, and ultimately, better human beings.
After 24 years of shaping young athletes and rewriting the record books at Festus High School, Bryant Wright retired from the boys program in late 2025, stepping away at the peak of his legacy. His mark on Missouri cross country and on the lives of the hundreds of young men and women he coached will endure for generations to come.
Ask people around the program what made those results possible and you’ll hear the same themes: consistency, character, and a “whole-team” mindset.
That approach didn’t just create fast times; it created athletes who learned to lead, to serve, and to take ownership of their role in something bigger. What Wright is proudest of, though, goes beyond medals. He has spoken about coaching as a way to help young men and women become “better individuals and runners” and to set them up for a better future.
In 2024, Wright’s impact was recognized with induction into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, an honor that reflects both the trophy count and the generations shaped by his example.
